About the app

Confusables is an educational practice app for learners of all ages. Practice and word checking work offline on your device. No account or login is required.

What is on Home

Home has three buttons, in this order.

Start Practice Test

Find the word in a sentence that needs to change, choose what it should be and read why. After each round of ten questions you see your score and all of your answers again.

Take A Quiz

Tap Take A Quiz and the first question appears at once. There are ten questions, one for each pair or group of confusable words the app checks. Each sentence has a blank, and the top of the screen shows Question 1 of 10, then Question 2 of 10 and so on. Choose a word and the next question opens straight away. There is no Check or Next button, and nothing tells you if an answer was right until the end. After the tenth answer, Quiz results shows all ten questions again with every choice. Only the choice you picked is marked, with a green check if it was right or a red cross if it was not. The other choices are left unmarked, including the right answer if you picked a different one. The quiz gives no total score. Take the quiz again starts over at question 1.

Try Your Own Phrases

Write your own text and the app checks it on your device, offering suggestions as comments for you to review.

Common questions

Why wasn’t a word flagged?

The checker uses the surrounding words to decide whether to offer a suggestion. It can miss errors, and a suggestion can be unsuitable.

Does the quiz keep my answers?

Not for long. The quiz holds your answers only in the app’s memory so that it can show your results, and does not save them. Going back to Home from a question or from the results clears them, and the next Take A Quiz begins at question 1. Switching to another app does not necessarily clear them while the app is still running, and closing the app, or iOS ending it, does. Your quiz answers do not appear in Try Your Own Phrases and are not kept as a history.

Can I recover a comment after the app restarts?

No. Drafts and comments are kept only in memory and are not saved for recovery after the app is closed or iOS ends it. Returning Home or switching to another app does not necessarily clear them while the app is still running.
